SUEZ and its partner Sichuan Dayi Water recently completed the acquisition^[1] of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the Meishan Pickles Industrial Park and were awarded a 30-year concession contract by the local government to provide specialised and high-quality industrial wastewater treatment services that promote the green development of the park and Meishan City.

Pickles are a hallmark and specialty industry for Sichuan Province. The Meishan Pickles Industrial Park, located on the east bank of the Min River in Sichuan, is the largest and most comprehensive and state-of-the-art pickle food processing industrial park in China, with more than 100 enterprises currently in residence. With the remarkable growth of the pickle industry came growing challenges for the local water environment. In its 14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection of the Ecological Environment, the government of Meishan City clearly stated its goal to improve the operation and maintenance of centralized treatment facilities for highly-concentrated brine from pickle processing to secure progress on pollution control in the industrial sector.

Following the acquisition, SUEZ and Sichuan Dayi Water have jointly taken over the operation and management of the first phase of the WWTP in the Meishan Pickles Industrial Park. By adopting its world-class treatment processes and managerial expertise, SUEZ provides safe, stable, and high-quality industrial wastewater treatment services to the enterprises in the park. Currently, the first phase of the WWTP has a treatment capacity of 19,800 m3/day. Subject to its development needs, a second and third phase of the project will be built, bringing the total treatment capacity to 50,000 m3/day.

Drawing on its experience and competitive strengths with industrial park management, SUEZ will significantly improve the stability and reliability of the operations of the wastewater treatment. The project will also produce alternative water to reduce water consumption. Approximately 280,000 m3  of alternative water will be generated and used as flushing water each year.

In Sichuan, further to providing municipal and industrial wastewater treatment services, SUEZ was also awarded the largest independent sludge incineration project in Southwest China in 2022, providing safe and reliable sludge disposal services for downtown Chengdu. Additionally, in its capacity as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Chengdu Municipal Government since 2016, SUEZ has been contributing to Chengdu’s sustainable development and low-carbon transition.
